ABSTRACT
The goal of the present study was to evaluate isolates of S. mutans in the saliva of nine families that were patients of the PSF of Curitiba, and to compare them according to severity of disease and socio-economic level of the family. A microbiological analysis of the saliva was conducted through an estimate of CFUs/mL, and biochemism. An epidemiological analysis was carried out (CPO-D and ceo-d), and studying saccharose consumption and mouth hygiene. S. mutans (88%) and S. sobrinus (12%) were detected. Through the multivariate analysis active caries was strongly associated with high saccharose consumption, high concentration and multicolonization by S. mutans. There was no correlation between family income and the epidemiology of the disease, although the education level of the parents was strongly associated with saccharose consumption.
DESCRIPTORS: Streptococcus mutans, Caries, Multivariate analysis.
