Abstract
Athree-dimensional modeling system of the craniofacial complex utilizing two- dimensional images of the postero anterior projection and lateral projection cephalograms was developed. The purposes of this article were to introduce the modeling process and to assess the measurement errors in this system. A standard wire frame model of the craniofacial complex was reshaped referencing the geometrical setup in the cephalometric recording. The result was a well constructed three-dimensional individual model. To assess the measurement errors, three-dimensional coordinates of metal spheres placed on a dry human skull were computed and the linear and angular measurements were taken. The results were compared with direct measurements using a three-dimensional digitizer. For the angular measurements, no significant difference was found between the two methods (p<0.05). There was a significant difference at the 5% level for the linear measurements; however, the unbiased estimator was 0.44mm, small enough for clinical use. The reconstruction model using this system presents three-dimensional information concerning an individual patientīs craniofacial morphology. It is possible that this will see useful application in three-dimen-sional orthodontic diagnosis, especially in cases of facial asymmetry, where there is three- dimensional jaw deformity and displacement.
