Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of irradiation on the polymerization behavior of dual-cure bonding agents. The dual-cure bonding systems used in this study were Clearfil Photo Bond (Kuraray Co., Ltd., Osaka, Japan) and Clearfil Liner Bond IIS (Kuraray Co., Ltd., Osaka, Japan). The polymerization radicals of the two sample groups; a group cured under irradiation and a group cured solely by chemical reaction, were analyzed with Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Spectroscopy. The ESR spectrum of each sample group was recorded at one-minute intervals for 60 minutes. The peak spin concentrations (max. value) were subjected to comparative analysis. In the case of Clearfil Photo Bond, no significant difference in the average of peak spin concentrations was found between the irradiated and non-irradiated group (p>0.01). In the case of Clearfil Liner Bond ll£, the average of the peak spin concentrations of the irradiated group was significantly higher compared to that of the non-irradiated group (p<0.01). The results of this study indicate that the polymerization behavior of a dual-cure bonding agent varies according to the products even though they are in the same category. Response to light irradiation was also found to vary from product to product. Therefore, it is necessary to fully understand the characteristics specific to each product in the category of dual-cure bonding agents.
