ABSTRACT
The relationship between bone strength and bone structure in rats fed a low-magnesium (Mg) diet was examined. Ten 4-weeks-old male Wistar rats were divided into a control group and a low-Mg group. For 8 weeks, each group was fed a conventional diet and a low-Mg diet (Mg 6 mg/l00 g diet) respectively. After the rats were sacrificed, bone strength, bone mineral content (BMC) and three-dimensional (3D) trabecular structure of the femur and the mandible were measured respectively. The results showed that the bone strength and the mandiblar trabecular bone density of the low-Mg group were significantly lower than that of the control group ,and the 3D trabecular structure analysis showed the low-Mg group's structure was reteriorated significantly as compared to the control group.(P<0.05). These findings suggest that Low-Mg diet model can be used as athe model changed mandiblar trabecular bone.
Key words: Magnesium / Bone quality / Bone strength / Micro CT / Bone morphometric analysis.
