RESUMO

O segmento da populaçao que vem tendo o maior aumento proporcional é formado por pessoas acima de 60 anos, determinando uma preocupaçao futura com varios problemas económicos, sociais e, muito especialmente, com a manutençao da saúde. Os maiores riscos para a saúde e o bem-estar advem do próprio comportamento individual, resultante tanto da informacao e vontade da Pessoa, como também das oportunidades e barreiras sociais presentes. Este caso clinico apresenta uma paciente de 80 anos, reabilitada proteticamente em um asilo. Esta paciente se diferencia da maioria dos moradores do asilo, possuindo uma contagiante vontade de viver, inclusive com varios planos futuros, dentre eles, realizar um album fotografico. Assim, considerar as pessoas com mais de 60 anos integrantes de um grupo homogeneo chamado "os idosos' resulta em prejuízos para o indivíduo e a sociedade. A responsabilidade do cirurgiao-dentista esta em compreender os idosos, nao sendo levado por estereótipos socioeconómicos e culturais. ABSTRACT

The population that has been more significantly increasing in number is formed by people with more than sixty years old. Consequences from this change in the population's age brings future worries about several economic and social problems and particularly about the health care of these elderly population. Major risks to health and well being come from the own individual behavior, resulting from the information and the person's requests, as well from the opportunities and social limits. This case report presents a 80-year old woman who received prosthetic rehabilitation at the geriatric home where she used to live. The focus is in the patient active aging conduct, that differs from the other residents behavior. This woman has a contagious wish for living, including several plans for the future, like making a photo book. Her example brings to reflection the fact that to consider the elderly as a homogeneous group hurts older people's individualism and may bring damages to the individual and to the society. The responsibility of the dental professionals is to understand the elder patients, respecting their peculiarities, not being guided by social, economic and cultural stereotypes.
