ABSTRACT

Condylar hyperplasia (hypertrophy) is believed to be caused by trauma, genetic abnormality or hormonal disorder, and is often treated by mandibular head resection. However, in patients with malocclusion causing facial asymmetry of the maxilla and mandible, occlusion and facial configuration are difficult to improve using mandibular head resection alone. Here, we performed orthodontic therapy and surgically moved the maxilla and mandible in a patient with severe facial asymmetry accompanied by unilateral mandibular head hyperplasia. The patient had previously undergone orthodontic therapy. Favorable occlusion was achieved, facial configuration improved and temporomandibular disorder was alleviated.(The Shikwa Gakuho, 108 : 346-354, 2008) Key words: condylar hyperplasia, condylar hypertrophy, facial asymmetry
