ABSTRACT
Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is a major life-threatening complication associated with surgery. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has been reported in a number of patients with PTE. The purpose of our survey was to evaluate the risk and prevention of PTE in patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Ichikawa General Hospital. All patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery under general anesthesia between May 2007 and June 2008 were enrolled in this survey. Patients attending both the oral medicine (OM) and oral cancer centers (OCC) were included in this survey. Perioperative risk of PTE and DVT, management of preventive therapy for PTE, and incidence of PTE were investigated. In OM patients, the number of patients with low, moderate or high risk of PTE was 216, 15 and 7, respectively. Similarly, 40, 10, and 15 were observed in OCC patients. No patient had the highest risk of PTE. All patients were used an Intermittent pneumatic compression was used in all patients during operation. No patient had PTE. Fifty-five patients (18. 7%) had moderate or high risk of PTE no patient was treated with unfractionated heparin. Approximately 50% of patients with carcinoma had a high risk factor there fore, appropriate risk determination and preventive therapy for PTE are an important consideration in patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery.
